Open Source steel design assistants to Indian Standards — hot-rolled IS 800, cold-formed IS 801/811, and nonlinear checks to IS 1893.
← Steltic home (AISC / AISI versions)
The Indian Standards version of the Steltic Hub and all the design assistants. Free and open source (MIT): run it on your own machine, with your own buildings and no limits. The design assistants use Indian Standards IS 800, IS 875, IS 1893, IS 18168, IS 808, IS 1161, IS 2062 (Part 1), IS 801, IS 811, IS 4000, IS 9595.
Watch the setup video or browse the 39 worked Indian designs and 24 nonlinear runs.
Pick a building, then drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and use the module strip to move between the design model and the nonlinear analyses.
Structural steel buildings designed to IS 800:2007 (limit state) with IS 875 loads, IS 1893 (Part 1):2016 with Amendments 1 and 2 seismic and IS 18168:2023 detailing; IS 808 sections, IS 2062 (Part 1) steel. OpenSees analysis embedded in the session, all members and connections designed, drift and stability checked. PEB sheds with welded, web-tapered portal frames (purlins and girts to IS 801), and SCBF, OCBF, EBF, SMF and OMRF systems, examples up to 18 storeys. Every report gives the steel take-off in kg/m². PEB jobs also give the support reactions per load case (dead, collateral, imposed, crane, every wind case, earthquake), a bill of materials, an anchor bolt plan and a STAAD.Pro model with every load case and combination — download them with each example.
The 20 Indian example briefs that ship with Steltic India, most common building types first, plus four sub-units, designed end to end. All are complete except Ex 5, a rooftop-solar capacity check that is partial on purpose.
Cold-formed members — studs, tracks, joists, purlins and girts — designed to IS 801 and IS 811 (working stress), with the lateral system a hot-rolled IS 800 Section 12 braced or moment frame designed alongside. IS 875 and IS 1893 loads, connection and drift checks in every package.
Every CFS example brief that ships with Steltic CFS India, designed end to end and all complete. Each report links to its lateral-system report.
Steltic Non Linear India takes a building designed by Steltic India and runs pushover in both directions, NLRHA with eleven records scaled to the IS 1893 elastic spectrum at DBE = (Z/2)·I·Sa/g and MCE = Z·I·Sa/g (never divided by R), and the Direct Design Method (a GMNIA fibre model with imperfections and residual stresses, every load combination scaled to collapse).
IS 1893 (Part 1):2016 provides no acceptance criteria for nonlinear analysis, so the results are for information: drifts, ductility demands, hinge rotations against the IS 800 Section 12 deformation capacities, base shear against VB, and the collapse load factor λu. No acceptance verdict is drawn from them. The verdicts in the table below are the two that exist: the analysis gate, and the IS 800 Annex B-1.2 section check at λ = 1 from the DDM.
Every hot-rolled example above, the five PEB sheds included, taken through pushover, NLRHA at DBE and MCE (11 records each, all converged) and the DDM. In the PEB sheds the DDM carries the purlin, girt and fly-brace restraints the design relies on, and warping stiffness for the welded tapered members.

Vmax/VB = peak pushover base shear / IS 1893 design base shear, per direction. NLRHA: the largest storey drift of the 11-record mean, at DBE and MCE, with the records that converged; IS 1893 (Part 1):2016 has no acceptance criteria for nonlinear analysis, so these are information. DDM: the gravity collapse load factor λu (rounded down), with the lowest system factor × collapse load factor φsλu over all load combinations as information (φs from US/AU calibrations, not an IS value); the IS 800 Annex B-1.2 section check at λ = 1 is the one code check (PASS when every member D/C ≤ 1.000, ratios rounded up). A sweep that stops numerically is stated as a solver stop, never read as a capacity. Verdict: COMPLETE when every analysis artefact passed the gate; SHORTFALL when they did but the B-1.2 check fails — a finding for the design, not an analysis failure; SOLVER STOPS when the gate passed with numerical stops stated; PARTIAL when an analysis is still to be completed (hover for the reason).
The design agents look up every clause in a local IS corpus that you build from BIS PDFs you have licensed yourself; no standard text ships with Steltic. Indigenous Indian Standards can be downloaded free of cost from the Bureau of Indian Standards after registering. The Hub converts the PDFs, indexes them and runs a validator; the agents then quote the clause text into the report so a reviewer can check it. Nothing leaves your machine.
Corpus stems: IS 800:2007 · IS 875 Parts 1–5 · IS 1893 (Part 1):2016 + Amd 1, 2 · IS 18168:2023 · IS 801 · IS 811 · IS 808 · IS 1161 · IS 2062 (Part 1) · IS 816 · IS 4000 · IS 9595
You write the brief in SI units: seismic zone II–V, soil type I–III, importance factor, R from IS 1893 Table 9, basic wind speed Vb, imposed loads in kN/m², IS 2062 grade, storeys, bays and the lateral system. The agent returns a structural engineering report (report.html) written for senior review, the member schedule with the steel take-off in kg/m², the calc package, the analysis model and an interactive 3D viewer. PEB sheds also get the support reactions per load case, a bill of materials, an anchor bolt plan and a STAAD.Pro model with every load case and combination. The Hub adds design variations scored in INR and Monte Carlo imperfection studies.
Steltic India uses the same harness as the AISC and AISI versions: it has no LLM of its own, you bring your own API key and pay the LLM costs. Which models work best, and how grounding works, are answered on the main FAQ.
